Did You Know.....?

That it's a good idea to check your dog's feet after he has been out in snow?

Snow can collect on his paws and turn into solid
balls of ice...very uncomfortable for him, so he
may become agitated and try to pull them off,
possibly pulling some hair out at the same time.

You can help by bathing his feet in warm
(not hot) water to soften the ice and then dry
his feet with a towel. Better still, use your
hairdryer on a warm setting to melt the ice.
Keep the dryer moving all the time, so as not
to burn his skin.

Keeping the hair on the pads of his feet trimmed
short is a good preventive measure, as is rubbing
the pads with "Paw Wax" or petroleum jelly,
before going out in snow/icy weather.

Salt & de-icer can cause problems to your dog's
feet; another reason to bathe his feet before
he gets the chance to lick them, as de-icer
can be toxic.

Also important to mention is that antifreeze
will poison your dog if any is swallowed, even a
small amount. You must seek a vet's attention
immediately if this happens.

Did You Know.....?

That it is just as important
to continue bringing your dog
for grooming in the winter,as
it is the rest of the year?

Healthy skin means a healthy
coat, so regular baths and
thorough brushing will help to
achieve this.

Ears, nails and feet also need
regular attention to prevent
                                     problems arising in those areas.

Trimming or clipping the coat as usual means easier upkeep for
you on wet or snowy days...your dog will be quicker to dry and
less likely to form mats or tangles, if the coat is shorter.

All in all, your dog will feel more comfortable in a well maintained
trim, whatever the time of year.

Did You Know.....?

That a dog can die if
left in a stationary car in hot,
or even warm weather?

*even if only for a short time
*even with a window open
*even if left in the shade
*even with a bowl of water

The temperature inside a parked car can rise to DOUBLE
the outside temperature in
6 to 10 minutes!!

A dog can suffer heat stroke and die in as little as 10 minutes.

Did You Know.....?

That fleas can be a problem for dogs all
year round, not just at certain times?

Flea bites can make your dog feel very miserable, as you can imagine and can also lead to inflamed skin and hair loss.

Your dog will scratch, lick and bite himself in an effort to relieve the irritation he feels, and in so doing he could swallow fleas which in turn can lead to being infected with tapeworms.

It makes sense to prevent all of this happening in the first place and there are various methods of prevention.

Your vet is the best person to advise you about what will suit your individual dog and put you on the right path to preventing both fleas and worms.

If you suspect that your dog may have fleas, PLEASE TELL ME when making your appointment, so that I may offer advice BEFORE you visit the salon.

Did You Know.....?

That the best time to bring your puppy to the dog groomer is: as soon as he has had his course of vaccinations at the vets?

At this stage it is unlikely that he will be needing to have a
bath or a trim, but it is good for him to meet the groomer
and have an introduction to the new sights and sounds within
a grooming salon, while he is still young.

A little nail trimming is a good idea on his first visit, as this
is something that he will most likely need to have done on a
regular basis, either by his owner, a groomer or a vet.

This is completely painless when done correctly, but for some
dogs who have not been introduced to it at an early age, it
can be a scary experience for them and in turn, can prove to
be quite a job for the groomer!

                                           Did You Know.....?

That you should never, ever feed your
dog chocolate?
It contains theobromine..a chemical which
can cause serious illness in dogs and can even result in death.

                         Other foods best avoided are........
                         raisins, grapes, tomatoes, onions
                         and mushrooms.

 Did You Know.....?

That if you can't feel your dog's ribs,
chances are he is probably overweight?

You should be able to easily feel his ribs
under his skin, if he is a healthy weight.
